If you want to make your own EVSE (electric vehicle service equipment AKA charging point/station) then you’ll need this specially designed EPC (electronic protocol controller) conforming to the IEC 62196 charging standard.

The main function of the EPC is to control the maximum current that the EVSE will ‘advertise’ to a connected EV. The EV then agrees a mutually agreeable charging current with the EPC and charging then commences by the EPC closing a small internal relay (rated at 250VAC/5A 30VDC/5A) which connects mains power to a power contactor inside the EVSE which, in turn, connects the mains supply to the EV’s charger.
Rated for 32A (maximum) use, it can be configured to tell the EV it can charge at any level between 7A to 32A (dependent on model) in 1A steps by using a simple resistor (assuming the EV is compatible - any EV fitted with either a Type 1 or Type 2 charging socket should be). One version is compatible with tethered installations only and the other with ‘free cable’ installations. It can also be configured to work with a tethered cable - or both free cable and tethered by means of a suitable switch.
A ‘free cable’ EVSE is one where the EVSE has a only a Type 2 socket and, consequently, a separate Type 2 to Type 1 or 2 cable (normally supplied by the EV driver) is required to connect EVSE to EV. This version has a plug lock facility but it is for solenoid-type locks only (the lock is NOT included). It is NOT compatible with motorized lock types for various reasons.
In the event of a mains power failure mid-charge, on restoration of mains power and once the EPC has completed it boot-up procedure (about 30 seconds), charging will recommence without manual intervention.
All types come supplied with a link fitted between ‘0V’ and ‘IC’ terminals, inhibiting the output. For use at maximum rated current, this link should simply be removed. If you want to use the EPC at a lower current than the maximum then the link should be replaced with an appropriate 1/4W resistor. This should be in accordance with the installation manual which can be downloaded here.
